BY SILAS NKALA LUPANE — A headmistress at Nyamandlovu Primary School in Matabeleland North is being accused of  stealing over US$6 800 paid by pupils as levies and school fees. Nakadashe Ngwazane (63) was not asked to plead to six counts of theft when she appeared before Lupane magistrate, Takudzwa Gwazemba last week. She was remanded out of custody to August 22 on free bail.

The court heard that between July 31 last year and January 9 this year, Ngwazane of Sauersetown in Bulawayo receipted US$13 926,50 as school fees and levies paid by pupils.

However, she only banked US$13 417 and allegedly converted US$509,50 to her own use. In the second count, she receipted R2 110 as school fees and levies which were paid by pupils and allegedly diverted all the money to her own use.

In the third count, she withdrew US$4 693 from the school’s CBZ bank account and only accounted for US$3 241,81 through receipts of expenditure. She allegedly could not account for US$1 451,19.

In the fourth count, Ngwazane banked US$3 721 in the school account. She later withdrew it and allegedly produced expenditure receipts with dates ranging from February 11 2011 to November 29 2011 as a cover up for the funds she withdrew and allegedly diverted to her own use.

On January 31 2012, Ngwazane withdrew US$1 056 from the school account, which she was supposed to use in the Better Schools Programme of Zimbabwe, but she allegedly converted it to own use.

On February 9 this year, she also withdrew US$1 700 from the school account and could only account for US$664 with a balance of US$1 056 not accounted for.

Ngwazane was arrested on July 11 this year after internal auditors from the Ministry of Education, Sports, Arts and Culture descended on the school and discovered she could not account for over US$6 883,45.

  Sanders Sibanda prosecuted.
