Tongogara’s interview opens can of worms

A can of worms has been opened in the life of General Josiah Magama Tongogara with several of his children and other family members joining a chorus of people questioning whether the late Zanla supremo really died in a car accident.

Report by Patrice Makova

They said if the Zanu PF leadership had nothing to hide, a commission of inquiry into his death over 33 years ago should be instituted to clear the air.

Recently, Angeline Gamanya, mother of Tongogara’s four children, said in an interview with a local weekly that the death of the former Zanla commander still haunted her and demanded that she be driven to the scene of the accident where her husband died.

But it has also emerged that Tongo, as the late Zanla chief of defence is commonly called, sired a total of 10 children with seven women.

The family spokesperson, Michael Magama Tongogara, insisted none of the seven women, including Angeline, was ever traditionally or legally married to him.

Some of Tongogara’s children residing outside Zimbabwe last week told The Standard that only the truth of what happened to their father would bring closure to the family and the whole nation.

They doubted the official version that their father died in an accident on December 26 1979.

“There are so many glaring inconsistences about what happened to our father. You can tell they [Zanu PF Officials] are lying,” said one of the children. “We want the truth to come out in order to bring finality to this issue.”

Another child said the images of Tongogara’s body depicted a burnt body not congruent with an ordinary side-swiping of the late general’s vehicle as official versions of accounts say.

“If his body was burnt, why is it that the wreckage of the car does not show any burns?” asked another Tongogara sibling, adding that from what the family had gathered from “credible sources”, some parts were missing from the body.

Michael, Tongogara’s elder brother, confirmed that the family was still in the dark about what happened.

He said up to now Tongogara’s personal belongings, including his knobkerry and other traditional artefacts, have still not been returned to the family.

Michael said when he was flown to Maputo to view his young brother’s body, something inexplicable happened, signifying that something was amiss in accordance with African traditional beliefs.

“All I can say is that when his coffin was opened for me at the mortuary, his body wept (mutumbi wakasvimha misodzi), then I just left,” said Michael.

He said even if the family was not satisfied with the explanation of what happened to Tongo, there was nowhere they could complain, hence the best was to remain quiet.

Michael said the family was of the opinion that Tongo’s children were being neglected by the government and the Zanla commander’s former close friends and compatriots.

He said while Tongo had four children with Angeline, namely Hondo (born 1969), Tichafa, Bvumai and Nyaradzo, he also sired six other children with different women.

These are Conrad (born 1963) who is the eldest of all Tongogara’s children, Sukai, Simba, Tichaitora, Annie and Granger.
Michael said most of Tongogara’s children were struggling to survive, with some unemployed despite the sacrifice made by their father and the closeness the national hero was to several senior government and party officials.

He said after his death, close friends, among them the late Retired General Solomon Mujuru and the late Chief Air Marshal, Josiah Tungamirai, virtually cut links with the family.

“Rex [Mujuru] was very close to Tongo after we recruited him from Zipra. With Tungamirai, they used to dress like twins,” said Michael.

He said the others close to Tongogara included Zanu PF politburo member and former minister, Kumbirai Kangai and former Zimbabwe Defence Forces commander and the late General Vitalis Zvinavashe.

“All these were Tongo’s people, but after independence no one came to us to see how the family or children were doing. Maybe there is something they are afraid of,” said Michael.

The death of Tongogara attracted a lot of speculation in independent Zimbabwe. Some suggested that his death supposedly in a car crash in Mozambique, a few weeks before ceasefire and independence was suspicious.

Zanu PF women’s league boss, Oppah Muchinguri, sat behind Tongogara in the same truck with four others. Tungamirai and others were in a front car. Muchinguri survived without a scratch.

In 2002, Muchinguri told Moto magazine that their vehicle side-swiped a trailer of another truck before rolling twice, resulting in the instant death of Tongo.

But readers responded that the story had many loopholes, including why their vehicle had no spare wheel for such a high-powered delegation.

The liberation hero never legally married: Michael

Michael said he was surprised to hear from the rumours that the army on Boxing Day organised commemorations for Tongo without consulting him or his other siblings, sisters; Annie, Rossie and Edna and young brother Joshua, as well as most of his children.

Michael questioned the involvement of Angeline and her daughter Nyaradzo in the army commemorations.

He said Angeline should not “masquerade” as a member of the Tongogara family, as the late guerrillas never married any of the seven women he sired children with.

“He had many girlfriends and children, Angeline being one of them. His philosophy was that we should produce as many children as possible, so that some of them would become liberation fighters,” he said

Michael said Nyaradzo was not yet known to the Tongogara family, as she was yet to be formally introduced to it, 33 years after she was born.

Moreover, the family believes that after 1980, Angeline married the late businessman, Cuthbert Moyo, whom they knew from the Zambian days.

Contacted for comment, Nyaradzo said she and her mother would only respond to questions in writing.

I was close to Josiah: Brother

Michael, who was based in Zambia during the struggle and is still an active Zanu PF member, said he was close to his brother.

He produced several letters from Tongo asking him to take care of his children even in the event that he died.

In one of the letters, dated December 4 1978, Tongogara wrote from Mozambique to his elder brother outlining his trials and tribulations with the war of liberation and his concern for Zimbabwe and his family.

Wrote Tongogara: “Budi early next year Amai Hondo is supposed to come to Maputo to stay. The party has decided that all officials should have their ‘[wives]’ in Mozambique in order to solve a number of problems. So I feel when all is set, she should bring with her two kids, Bvumai and Sukai. You remain with two boys Hondo and Tichafa. I want the two young ones for one simple reason, because they are young and can easily catch up with Portuguese, though they will be integrated with other English-speaking children.”

Michael said the late Vice-President, Simon Muzenda, helped to write supporting affidavits to enable Tongogara’s children to get birth certificates as he knew them and their mothers.

It is a bit odd that his brother is coming out like this now. What has he been doing all this time? This is 33 years down the line.

And this business of disrespecting the mother of Tongo’s four children is just not on. It is typical African behaviour where uncles want to take control of things that should really be getting legs for and from the children

those of us who understand nyika better will inform u kuti great man like Tongo can be killed but their ideas will never die.The empty talk yekuti he is dead so we the people of this country must keep quiet is a reflection of shallow thinking. Can the American erase the history of G Washington,Jefferson,Lincoln….etc Those who are saying the issue is not relevant should tell us more, asi ndimi makauraya?,why are u afraid of the truth ?,a truth that has been concealed for years for that matter .Zimbabwe will never heal for as long as the truth about Tongo,Chitepo, and other atrocities is not revealed.

the Tongo issue exposes a lot one the tactic of a charlatan masquerading as Mrs Tongo when in actual fact she is Mrs Moyo.Thats very bad.Our minds should teach us better.2 it exposes the level of journalism in our country, how can the entire state media be fooled into believing her money seeking ploy, remember this is the same woman who once claimed that she was suffering from neglect and went to beg money to the MDC-T leadership yet she owns a flourishing farm in Concession (Nyaradzo farm).Again it is the media that gave her ploy relevance with some calling her a silent lamp and yet she was married to a business man the owner of Paw Paw lodge. Her recent facts leaking interview with the Sunday Mail took other media houses by storm yet there was more to her activities and story that demanded investigation and interrogation. She is a con woman worse than Rotina Mavhinga (the Chinhoi diseal woman) who thought she could abuse the Tongo family for her own good.Bravo to the Standard crew that unearthed this story.

its such a shame that all this is coming out in the public. i think ZBC and the Herald are to blame for fueling this fight in the family. What Mai Hondo and Tongo’s son said about Tongo’s young brother Joshua was not necessary. What was said about the babamukuru was also not necessary. Its only fair that this babamukuru says his side of the story. Don’t throw stones when you are in a glass house.

33 years ago there was no possibility of an opposition party. Now its possible but not without a fight. 33 years ago if the Tongo’s had said anything they would be dead. Now is the right time. In the same issue of the Sunday Mail the chairman of the Tongogara Memorial Trust, Dr.Simbi Mubako suggested the renaming of Boxing day to Tongogara day.As much as we do not mind honoring this great icon of our struggle the suggestion was somehow clumsy.Firstly because our Heroes day(s) holiday is already set aside to remember the collective efforts of all our liberation war fighters.Secondly if we are to start allocating individual holidays to our heroes how many non-holidays will be left on our calender?Mubako talks about Boxing day being a colonial holiday meaning that even Xmas will have to be renamed, presumably Robert Mugabe Day and Easter holidays being allocated to a plethora of other heroes like Joshua Nkomo,Simon Muzenda and Joseph Musika .Will it ever end,eh. Dr.Mubako, sir!

How could Tongo dare chat with Smith and even ask Smith how his mother was faring [ he knew the mother from his early years in Shurugwi] during the Lancaster House Conference when BOSS was totally against that and would not even greet the Rhodesians? How could Tongo dare advise the boss to agree to the terms offered at the Conference arguing that the Rhodesian problem could not be solved by war arguing that it would still take more years to end.Worse was the assurance that he gave the boss that he [Tongo] and General Walls [ Rhodesian army general] could jointly find a solution to the nationalists’ fears surrounding the problems that would inevitably arise from the dicey ceasefire and subsequent merger of guerrillas and Rhodesian forces into one Zimbabwean army ivo BOSS vachiti kwete, pamberi nechimurenga. He was more than getting soft.Ndokutengesaka ikoko.Mutengesi chaiye saChitepo who was accused[though without enough evidence] of ochestrating the Nhari rebellion naasamanyika ake and escaped open censure but not assassination.Wasnt Tongo insightful or intelligent enough to see that independence by way of a settlement would prevent BOSS from achieving his cherished dream of making Zimbabwe a socialist state, not just an independent country? the Tongos need to speak with one voice and dismiss this charlatan and her daughter before they are ruined.First i think Nyaradzo is a gold digger like her mother hence the endless failing marriages ,these guys need to know if she is a bona fide Tongo by going for DNA.Secondly this woman mai Hondo must immediately stop claiming to be a Tongogara but the Tongos must make the traditional payments for the children she have with their son.As for now she must stop carrying duties or anything using their name she is just like the rest of the silent women Tongo had affairs with. Those familiar with this family must speak out now coz i remember her relatives refused to let the body of Tongo inside her Belvedare house saying he had not married their daughter an event which confirms Mike’s story.

@ greg Norman i hope your contributions are in satire mood coz if they are not it means your understanding of history is not only shallow but also misleading.tongo believed in a non tribal and non racdial Zimbabwe thats why he said these words ‘we are fighting the system and not the whitemen” this meant that the struggle for Zimbabwe was a fight anchored a quest to create a new system of governance that allows participation of all on merit grounds albeit skin or tribe

the only reason why Angeline Gamanya aka mai Hondo,Mrs Moyo was silent for so many years is that she was still destroying washaya/Moyo’s business but because the business as evidenced by the current state of paw paw logde is not performing that good she wants to come to the Tongos for silver and gold.Mayaz mhani she left them when she decided to get married to the Moyos. In fact the papers (Sunday mail and the easily duped Lance Guma’ Nehanda and the SWradio) which gave her story covergae and relevance must withdraw their stories because they are based on falsehoods.Mai Hondo should appologise to the Tongos and the people of Zimbabwe.

  59. Matavara January 10, 2013 at 9:51 pm #

No disrespect to Cde Tongogara!! Surely if everyone whose parent died during or as a result of the liberation struggle claimed such special treatment for life, where will we be.

These kids should fight for themselves and the country like their dad did, and not try to survive on their fathers legacy! He wanted a lot of children to fight the liberation war – let them live their father’s dream. The war is yet to be won!!!

Pane group rakapanduka in Mozambique in 1979. Vanhu vanga vaiswa mu cabinet yaTongo, pakafa Tongo they demanded commission of enquiry ndobva vasungwa and sentenced to death in Mozambique. Queen Elizabeth pleaded with Mugabe in 1981 for their pardon and were released.
Some of them went on to form Liberators Platform because they believe War Vet Association doesn’t represent Liberation interests but ZANU PF’s.
During Mugabe’s speech on Mujuru’s burial, he named umwe wacho as true liberators and that person he named is still alive.
Get the person and get to know what actually transpired. The history they wrote is wrote is wrong and biased. The era post ZANU PF will also give us chance to re-write and implicate evil people. Time is coming.

Thanks Ndochitaura Chokwadi for link. It’s very insightful.

Readinding your link took me back to the mid and late 70s when people would not trust there relatives let alone neighbours for fear. At that time all it required was to be pointed by finger that when so and so disappeared mai nhingi or baba nhingi had been talking to terrorists or that the soldiers were told by that old man or old woman that comrades had gone this direction baba! And also confusing at that time vanamudhara vasiri kunatso ziva kuti which was the real Zanu or whether to go back to Zapu or that uanc was to link the 2 zanus and zapu and then negotiate with Smith and end up with a country called Zimbabwe-Rhodesia but still saying bwan to murungu. Then to add salt to injury came another type gun carrying people called Selous scouts. They would behave like vanamukoma and then come back at night or sent soldiers bitting people. But the general atmosphere by the majority was to support anything that opposed those in the minority at the time.Sam

This is an old story better left to the dustbins of history. There are a lot of Guerrillas whose families never got anything from the state at the end of the war. I think we should be asking about the identity and proper burials of the Guerrillas who where hanged at Chikurubi and other prisons that gt fixated with the death of Tongogara. Do people think Genarals don’t die? Mujuru,Ox etc. they are all normal people and don’t only die because of schemes and stuff like that. They are normal people who did extra ordinary things in their time, Period. Are they more important than everybody else Negative. Let’s talk about the real Guys who died unknown and whose spirits still call to us for proper burial and recognition of what they did for us than weep forever over Generals who died not in battle but in their high offices.did the To go family expect Mujuru to inherit the estate of Tongo. If Mujuru was friendly to Tongo should he be expected to befriend the whole Tonogara family? I had friends in my several military wars that I have fought and never had to befriend the families of those Comrades of mine. I think it is stupid to think even Generals should be intiitled to privileges over and above what every Combatant gets as terminal benefits and any body who thinks like that should be told off. Some guys never got anything and still lie in unmarked graves whilst Mai Tongo Hershel’s was running shebeens next to Tarraskane hotel.tongo died in an accident in Mozambique and not in a battle like most guys who IED on the front so get over it.he was our ommander but not more important than everybody else. It happens in wars nd he knew it himself.do we owe the Tongogara family more than we owe all the heroes, negative, repeat negative, so get over it

@ Muchatiroto, learn to get over your post war trauma, you have overshadowed your otherwise noble talk with emotions.I dont believe kuti Tongo wanted to be treated special if you follow your general like you claim he was to you,you would agree with me that he wanted the best of this country regardless of tribe kana race.He repeated this in many encounters to the extent that he became the philosophy of non racial politics. If you can listen even to his interviews he has repeated that he never intends or intended to be treated more equal than others like what many are doing nhasi

  67. we were there January 11, 2013 at 3:39 pm #

its only foolish kuti Tongo died in office because the same argument would say leaders are not fighters,,leadership means steering the fight meaning providing strategies, planning ,resources and keeping the fight on course and in motion.organizations, political or military are structured like that each stage,,each level has its own duties and responsibilities which demands the cooperation and coordination of others to function, shame on you Muchatiroto, asi waiva we Nhari rebellion or Vashandi?

  68. jmt January 11, 2013 at 3:47 pm #

Tongo’s children have not and will not ask for special favors, all they are demanding is the truth in two ways .Clarification of mai Hondo’s interview carried by the Sunday Mail in which she deliberately lied in cahoots with her daughter Nyaradzo that Tongo had just 4 children when in actual fact they are ten.The basis of this quest for clarification is that it appears sinister on the part of a married woman who as proved later never got married to Josiah at all to claim he had just four children.Secondly if the mujurus have asked for clarification on Solomon;s death what should stop the Tongos from doing the same,is asking for clarification a special favor if so why and whats there to hide

the sad point about many pseudo intellectuals and fly by night veterans commenting here is that they don’t understand what they are talking about. The issue as to why vana vaTongo may be sidelined has a lot to do with the mystery surrounding the death of their father, period. Some elements within the confines of this country are fearful of a vengeful powerful Tongogara that’s why they have to remain down below the spectrum of politics, economic and society .As the sidelining continues it has given opportunity and relevancy to tricksters and all celebrated gold seekers such as mai Hondo and her daughter. In a nut hell these two ladies are a creation of the government and state media who have wantonly and knowingly given them space and relevance.

  70. James Mayo January 11, 2013 at 4:34 pm #

can somebody please tell me what the other Tongogara children are doing in life? is it true that some of them are just “gunners” (private) in the army with no rank at all? If true then i think it is further kunyatso fixa the family kuvachepesa. we all know most of the top army guys were not promoted on merit. could they have not given some of these children a bit of some ranks not kunyadzisa mweya waTongo. If these children were born on the war front in mozambique they can equally qualify to be veterans of the struggle of some sort.

I have met some of Cde Tongos Children besides Gamanya’s. I think Gamanya is dubious in that she thinks she alone can get credit for Tongos legacy. What abt Tongos other children . She is a drama Queen who causes trouble when she needs money. Tongos other kids deserve more but they are getting on with life. All they want is recognition and involvement in their fathers legacy(Gamanya clearly only wants her kids to be recognised).

  74. Dzitsi January 12, 2013 at 6:51 am #

War is never a clean thing and a liberation army is never perfect. I think that a lot of good and bad happens at war. The promise & lure of becoming the King (or Prime Minister or President) is a factor never mentioned in the story of these struggles. We will never know the whole truth about the plots, conspiracies, scheming, alliances etc of the liberation struggle. Who knows who was plotting against who especially at the end when Independence was in site? That part of the Struggle for independence, the struggles within the struggle, and the unnecessary evil that comes with war is rarely written in History books. The victor and survivor always get to write the History books – and someone else may have a different version.
