‘Harvesting the buffet crop’ at Rainbow Towers

Wining & Dining
Eating Out has become one of the favourite things on my list of “what to do on weekends”. On this particular occasion my dining companion and I armed ourselves with nothing but empty tummies and set out to visit Harvest Garden which is located in the Rainbow Towers Hotel.

As we walked in through the main gate we could see lots of people coming and going. Not all of this traffic can be attributed to diners and hotel guests however; most of them were attending the Sunday church services that take place in the Conference Centre adjoining the hotel.

Although we were on foot, we noted that there is ample parking for both the hotel and Conference Centre. This is protected by boomed gates and drivers are required to present their parking cards to remove their vehicle from the parking lot.

Entering the glamorous hotel foyer, we spotted the clear marking for our target restaurant and headed straight for Harvest Garden. Upon arrival a smiling waitress greeted and asked us where we wanted to sit; she then went on to show us where the starters were and by this time I can tell you quite honestly that both of us could have happily eaten the whole bowl of soup! My companion is well-known for being a “soupaholic” and she knows and likes her soups!

We sat down to enjoy our onion soup and our friendly waitress Fungai Musekiwa came to check on us and enquired if we wanted drinks of any sort, and went on to show us where to find the table of main meals. Before moving on to our main courses, we both ordered a strawberry milkshake, strawberry being the only flavour available on the day of our visit. In retrospect, it probably wasn’t such a good idea to have sweets just after salts. Our milkshakes were not as sweet and enjoyable as we’d expected, but as I said, this could have been our fault for having them after a bowl of soup!

As we had nowhere to be and nothing to rush off to afterwards, we took our time chatting and sipping on our milkshakes before making our sojourn to the mains table. Having decided that we were ready to take a tour of the mains buffet, we equipped ourselves with plates and prepared to make the most of it. One of the best things about a buffet is that you get to taste all sorts of this and that. I feel that at this point I ought to “come clean”, I am a meat person! I love my meat! Especially when it is roasted. On the beef front, however, they only had a rather uninspiring looking beef stew; I decided to try it nonetheless, and added rice, fresh salads and baked potatoes to fill my plate.  Our chef was not far from the fruits of his labour, in fact he was busy in the middle of the buffet area cooking chicken and fish stir fry to order. We opted to order one of each and gave the chef our table number so he could bring them over when ready.

We settled down to enjoy our meal and it dawned on us that the sensible thing would have been to order the stir-fry element before attending to the buffet section. There were at least three tables of diners who had placed their stir-fry orders before us and the wait was quite considerable. We were both surprised and delighted to be quite literally “saved by the chef!” who delivered our stir-fries in person and they were perfectly done and well worth the wait.

Fungai was never far from our table, on hand to regularly offer drinks and directions. We considered having a bottle of wine to complement the remainder of our meal, but having taken stock of the prices, we opted for an acceptable Sauvignon Blanc by the glass at a rather pricey US$6. Considering we then enjoyed two glasses each, the bottle may have been a better choice in the long run!  We finished off with reasonable coffees and proclaimed our Sunday Lunch at Harvest Garden to have been an enjoyable success.
