Innovative menu at The Plot

Wining & Dining
Of all the Zim on a Plate categories, “Coffee Shop” seems to me to have the widest variation in entries. Read the description on the Restaurant Guide — snacks, light meals and non-alcoholic beverages! On this basis alone The Plot should promote itself to “Deluxe Coffee Shop” as its food more than qualifies it as a “High End Bistro”!

My companion had the butternut, haloumi and mushroom gourmet salad (US$12) and I the gourmet steak roll (US$14), both of which lived up to their gourmet label, mine being beef fillet strips with tangy fried onions and tomatoes served on homemade ciabatta bread. As is my wont these days I opted for salad and no chips and for once was more than satisfied with this healthy option, which was without doubt the most exciting salad I have yet had in any restaurant — figs, strawberries, pear, baby spinach — every mouthful a delightful surprise for the palate and bearing no resemblance to oft served wilted “rabbit food”!

Breakfasts are served until 11 am and at US$5, The Plot breakfast seemed excellent value and the vegetarian deluxe or Plot deluxe at US$10 including coffee/tea, an option to suit big eaters!  In addition to variations on the above there is a “make your own” omelette, croissant and fruit salad selection — something for everyone!

Lunch is an interesting selection of bruchettas, ciabatta or pitta sandwiches, wraps and rolls and the ever popular half chicken accompanied by the wonderful salad or chips. A comprehensive “kiddies” selection is a thoughtful addition.

Cakes, muffins, apple pie, pancakes, cheese cake — a wide selection of delights to enjoy on their own (at a very reasonable price of US$2 to US$5) with coffee, tea, hot chocolate, milkshakes or chilla beverages (a South African brand of frappés, smoothies, hot chocolate) which I admit to never having encountered before, nor were they sampled on this visit, as my “job description” for this entry category of course includes compulsorily tasting the coffee. I am happy to report that my Espresso was excellent as was my companion’s filter coffee; neither must I omit to add that the chocolate mousse cake (US$3) was a generous slice of light chocolate sponge and rich creamy chocolate filling and icing, a delicious end to a refreshingly different and tasty lunch.

The Plot is a popular “chillie spot” judging by the number of laptops in evidence when we lunched. It also has a Facebook site with lots of photos and background on the restaurant for those wanting further information! Take away coffee is available from 7.30am every morning.  Although they are still waiting for their liquor licence (a process we all know can take a very long time!), BYO is acceptable with a corkage charge of US$3. To quote the menu “all our meals are made to order and made with a lot of pride and care”, a claim I found to be fully justified. I will certainly return to The Plot for a relaxed and deliciously different lunch!  Upon our recommendation, The Plot, with an outstanding score, and contacted by Zoap management, I’m happy to report, agreed immediately to join the ranks of the Deluxe Coffee Shops for 2013.
