The man, Chenjerai Ngwa-dzai (29) of Mushunje Village under Chief Marange, could not stomach the termination of the employment contract and decided to take his life.

Police in Mutare confirmed the death.

Manicaland’s assistant pro- vincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Luxon Chananda said Ngwadzai had a heated argument with his manager, who had instructed him to go and collect his work suit and gumboots and surrender them since his contract had expired.

Ngwadzai returned with an axe and gumboots, forcing his boss to call for security guards to disarm him.

Ngwadzai retreated and ran away. The security guards gave chase. He reached a eight-metre deep open-cast shaft and threw himself into it.

Chananda said police retrieved his body and investigations were in progress.
