Jenna Krehbiel came face to face with the big cat when she popped into the ladies’ during an outing to the Isis Shrine Circus in Salina, Kansas “I went in to use the bathroom, and a lady came in to get her daughter out and said there was a tiger loose,” she said.

“I didn’t know it was in the bathroom, and I walked in the door, which closed right after I had walked in.”

“I saw the tiger; it was at most two feet in front of me, and I turned around calmly and walked back toward the door. Someone opened the door and said, “Get out”. “You don’t expect to go in a bathroom, have the door shut behind you and see a tiger walking toward you.

“Looking back, it was a scary ordeal… My daughter wanted to know if it had washed its hands. That was her only concern.”

Chris Bird, manager at the Salina Bicentennial Centre which was staging the circus, said the tiger escaped during the show, and staff quickly barricaded off the concourse.

He said the tiger veered off into an open bathroom and a security guard got people out, and then barricaded the door. Ms Krehbiel had entered the opposite door. “Once she saw the tiger, I’m sure she knew to go the other way.

“Overall, it was a scary, surreal moment. I am glad no one was hurt or injured,” he said.

Meanwhile, zoo keepers wore fancy dress costumes to play the part of animals for an emergency drill in China.

The zoo, in Taiyuan, capital of northern China’s Shanxi Province, was practising its action plan for dealing with an animal escape. Staff wore cartoon costumes to play animals including lions, alpacas and bears.

In the exercise, a pretend lion was recaptured by keepers equipped with nets, while a fake bear was recaptured after attacking staff from inside its cage.
