COMPETITION between the country’s mobile telecommunications networks has intensified, as players offer reduced tariffs to get a foothold in the market.

The country’s three leading mobile operators — Econet Wireless, Telecel and NetOne — are engaged in a “tariff war” for the hearts and minds of subscribers who have benefitted as a result.
Last week, Econet — the largest mobile operator — reduced tariffs by 60% across all networks.
Econet chief executive officer, Douglas Mboweni said the new tariffs were unconditional and would be effective immediately on all packages and at all times of the day.
The company said all Econet customers would also enjoy Buddie Zone tariffing with discounts of up to 90%.
“Econet will mount an extensive campaign to show that it not only has the cheapest tariffs, but it also has the best value for money,” said Mboweni. “Our tariffs are unconditional and we do not ask you to buy something extra or spend so much to get something. When we give, we give. We are not the largest operator by accident.”
Mboweni said the company was not afraid of competition, amid allegations that it had disconnected Telecel to stave off competition.

“We have the cheapest tariffs and it will remain that way. We have the best coverage and we will continue to broaden it. We also have the largest range of products and services and we will keep investing and introducing more,” he said.
Recently, Econet disconnected calls to and from Telecel, saying the mobile operator had not renewed its licence.
Econet eventually reconnected Telecel after it renewed its licence. Telecel already offers its subscribers three packages that offer US$30 and US$60 bonus on local voice calls, data and local short message services.
The other package offers unlimited calls to any local number and unlimited data and short message services.
NetOne is offering its subscribers US$13,80 free on intra calls with every US$1 recharge.
Subscribers also get US$138 worth of free talk time from 8pm to 6am the following day.
