MUTARE — A 19-year-old adulterous woman from Marange district was recently ordered to perform 450 hours of community service for dumping a five-month foetus, in an effort to conceal the pregnancy from her husband.

Yvonne Ndagurwa from Chiwarika village under Chief Marange pleaded guilty to baby dumping when she appeared before Mutare magistrate, Patience Vutuza last week.

Prosecutor Shepherd Chavarika told the court that on September 6, Ndagurwa, who is married to John Ndagurwa, was left alone at her homestead.

She went to a pit latrine where she gave birth and dumped the baby in the pit.

The matter came to light when some neighbours realised she was having difficulties walking, prompting them to ask her what the problem was.

She failed to give a satisfactory answer and later admitted to dumping a baby.

The neighbours immediately reported the matter to the police, leading to her arrest.

The husband said he was not aware that his wife was pregnant. “The fact that she dumped the baby means that she was hiding the pregnancy from me. What she did is very wrong and I have since divorced her,” he said.
