CIMAS Medical Aid Society (Cimas) increased its contribution rates without giving enough notice to members, in blatant violation of its constitution, The Standard has established.

According to Cimas membership rules which were issued in terms of the society’s constitution, the board is mandated to give to all member firms and members at least one full calendar month’s written notice of any intended contribution increase.

In a notice dated September 6 2013, addressed to the members, the society said due to the spiralling costs of medical care, it had reviewed contributions with effect from October 1 this year.

“The adjustment has only been effected on the Medexec and Private Hospital Packages,” said Cimas in the statement. “Please find attached the new contribution rates that are due on September 25 2013.”

The rationalisation drew outrage from customers who felt cheated by the society.

Cimas chief executive officer, Macdonald Chaora declined to comment on the issue and referred the paper to Roderick Takawira, the group’s IT executive, who could not be reached for comment.

“You should call Takawira, he is the right person to discuss this with,” said Chaora.

Cimas marketing manager, Tatenda Madzikanda acknowledged receiving written questions from The Standard but had not responded by the time of going to print.

“This email serves to acknowledge receipt, we shall revert back to you with feedback,” she said.
