THE Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) has not been able to enforce standards, ethics and monitor accuracy because it lacks financial resources, a senior official with the commission said last week.

ZMC commissioner, Henry Muradzikwa said the organisation had not been able to contribute anything meaningful to fulfil its mandate of promoting press freedom and to see an increase of newspapers publishing in vernacular languages because they were underfunded.
Muradzikwa, a veteran journalist who worked for several newspaper publishers including Zimpapers, was addressing journalists at a media workshop in Chinhoyi last week.
He said the media was not serving the country as expected because it has remained polarised, as witnessed during the July 31 harmonised elections He added that the media situation in the country was pathetic and needed urgent attention.
He urged journalists to report objectively and leave the editing to editors and not to help in misleading the people by misrepresenting facts to editors and censoring themselves.
“Journalists should be fully equipped to carry out their work properly without bias, as some journalists are helped by newsmakers, thereby compromising the truth,” said Muradzikwa.
James Muona, one of the journalists who attended the workshop, urged the commission to continue interacting with journalists.
