The Samba dancers failed to come to the country for the inaugural edition of the carnival last year as a result of preparations for the World Cup to be hosted by their country in June.

Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) spokesperson Sugar Chagonda said the dancers would perform at the Airport Lounge.

Chagonda was speaking on the sidelines of the launch of this year’s edition of the carnival at Long Cheng Plaza that was attended by Tourism minister Walter Mzembi and ZTA chief executive officer Karikoga Kaseke among many other dignitaries on Thursday evening.

“We are moving away from a discourse where ZTA has to do everything and getting into a new era where as a government arm our role is to make the environment conducive,” said Chagonda. “A carnival is for the people and it only makes sense for us to give support to promoters and other individuals with concepts to develop them for the carnival.”

He said they had also engaged other promoters like Chipaz (Patson Chimbodza) and Josh Hozheri for other events at the carnival. “Hozheri will host the Jazz Night at Pamuzinda Highway Escape while Chipaz will host the Zim Dancehall Night. Carnival Samba will be hosted by Biggie Chinoperekwei and Robert Zhuwao hosts the Exotic Night,” said Chagonda.

The carnival will run between May 16 and 25.

Chagonda said last week they received the advance team from Trinidad and Tobago which was expected to leave yesterday. “The team came to familiarise with the city before their steel band comes for the carnival.

“They are expected to leave on Saturday (yesterday) after assessing where they will perform as well as how they can design their float.
