Masvingo — The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has warned that workers are mulling crippling mass street protests to force the government to find a solution to the spiralling economic crisis in the country.

Speaking at a labour forum on Thursday, ZCTU president George Nkiwane said it was time that the workers took the government head-on.
“It is time for painful decisions….We should not continue crying that things are hard… Takasasikwa kare, motya here kuenda mu street kuti ngatirambei izvi?,” he said.
Nkiwane accused Zanu PF of doing nothing when the country was burning.
“We do not eat rhetoric; we need food on the table. The revolution is now devouring its own. We should say enough is enough, but we cannot do it if you remain silent. Zanu PF is looting, yet you remain mum,” he said.
Nkiwane, who said the ZCTU was on a countrywide tour to sensitive the workers, accused politicians of being more concerned about power and positions in their respective parties than the people’s welfare.
“Zanu PF as well as the opposition MDC are both concerned about positions and scrambling for power than the people’s welfare. A mentality of looting has spread across the country. Once anyone gets into power and position of authority, they think they are fine,” he said.

Workers who were in the meeting endorsed the ZCTU plans. They said they were prepared to take to the streets to send a clear message to Zanu PF that they were now fed up.
