New CAPS United coach Mark Mathe began his tenure on the Green Machine hot sit with a battling point following a goalless draw away to Harare City at Rufaro yesterday. It was Mathe’s first match in charge since his Briton namesake Mark Harrison quit as CAPS United coach two weeks ago, having endured some trying times at the club which culminated in severing the ties in the end.

A win for Mathe would have seen the Harare giants team climb as high as fourth on the log standings and keep them within a touching distance of the leading pack.

But he was pleased with a point after the match.

“We would have loved to take the three points but I will take the point, especially being the away side versus a tough opponent with a good coach, good players and resources. I think we put up a good show in what was a tale of two halves,” said the former Highlanders caretaker coach. Mathe conceded that he is gradually going to make some changes to the system, which was successful more often than not, employed by his former boss Harrison.

“Coaches are born and bred from different schools of football. I have got my own way of doing things but I will not change much from what Harrison was doing. I will top it up a bit and hope that the team continues to win,” he said. His opposite number Taurai Mangwiro is almost a frustrated man having watched, for the umpteenth time this season, his team fail to take maximum points after a dominant display.

“It was a cagey affair, we created a number of opportunities and we just couldn’t have that killer punch and at the end we were our own worst enemy considering we experienced some scary moments towards the end.

“It is quite frustrating failing to convert opportunities that come our way, but it is better to have a team that creates chances than a team that does not create scoring opportunities. At the end of the day it’s about working hard to improve on our shortcomings,” explained the former CAPS United gaffer.
