At least 1 500 athletes from 10 southern region countries are expected to take part in the Region V Confederation of Universities and Colleges Sports Association games (Cucsa), which will kick-off in Bulawayo next week.

Zimbabwe will be hosting the regional tertiary games for the first time since 1996, when the country successfully staged the competition in Harare.
The 18th edition of the Cucsa games, slated for August 1-6, will see the top college and university athletes from the region compete in nine sporting disciplines.
In an interview with Standardsport, Zimbabwe Tertiary Institutions Sports Union (ZTISU) official Tsitsi Kufa said the country was ready to host the Cucsa games.
“Preps are at an advanced stage so I can safely say we are ready to host. We have secured all the venues we need; accommodation is sorted and the crucial areas that need attention have been taken care of,” she said.
“Zimbabwe has about 200 athletes competing and with the quality of athletes we have this time, we are expecting a lot of medals from these games. We have a number of top athletes from various national teams and clubs in different disciplines. From these games we are saying we want to contribute to the growth of sport in Zimbabwe and be able to feed athletes into the national teams,” Kufa added.
Zambia played hosts to the Cucsa games in 2014 as Zimbabwe emerged third on the medals table.
