MWOS FC ended their seven-match winless streak to close the gap between them and PSL pacesetters Simba Bhora to six points after edging TelOne FC 1-0 at Ascot stadium.

Goalkeeper Criss Mverechena was the fall guy after he failed to handle what looked like a harmless cross that was whipped into the box by Valentine Katsande, resulting into a goal after 81 minutes. The win lifted them to 49 points, which is six points behind PSL leaders Simba Bhora FC who have 55 points.

However, MWOS FC coach Lloyd Mutasa said they were now aiming to ensure a top four finish. He said: “Games in the Premier League are never easy. We really expected a tough encounter and it was tough but we won by a thin margin.

“I’m sure this will give confidence going forward. We went 16 matches unbeaten and now we have to see where these wins will take us.

“I am sure if we keep ourselves grounded, we will have a decent finish.

“After the 40 point mark, I indicated that we have reached our goal, but for now I am challenging these youngsters to target a top four finish.”

Everson Feremba had the best chance of the first half in the first 20 minutes, when he was picked by Arthur Banda inside the box but his effort went over bar.

MWOS, however, felt hard done as they had two goals ruled out for off-side in the first half. Moreso, their midfielder Abubakar Moffat was a victim of a number of crude tackles.

The hosts, TelOne FC struggled throughout the first half but were much improved in the second half.

They also had a goal ruled out after forward Panashe Mutasa was adjudged to have fouled goalkeeper Martin Mapisa before Washington Navaya’s strike.

MWOS broke the deadlock on the 81st minute when Criss Mverechena failed to collect what looked like a harmless cross from Valentine Katsande. That was all they needed to collect maximum points.

TelOne coach Herbert Maruwa conceded defeat.

“It was a close game,” Maruwa said. “We managed to create several chances, but in the end we lost.

“Maybe it was a blunder from the goalkeeper, but it’s still game on. We need to soldier on and make sure we improve our home record.”
