THE Hospitality group, African Sun Limited, proved that its success in some of the continent’s toughest markets is no nine-day wonder when it won the Hospitality Management Team of The Year award at the recently held Africa Investor Tourism Investment Awards.
African Sun’s management team has been able to draw on its experience gained from operating in a challenging macro-economic environment in Zimbabwe into its key expansion markets.
This is not the first time the company’s management team has won an award for its efforts in raising the profile of the hospitality sector.
Shingi Munyeza, the group’s chief executive won the Director of The Year in 2008 and was awarded runner-up by the same institute in the same competition in the two years prior.
Farayi Mangwende, African Sun’s group corporate communications manager, who was present to receive last week’s award said: “It’s an honour for us.
Last year we had several high-profile guests staying at some of the properties we manage, the most eminent being the Obamas at The Holiday Inn Accra, Ghana.
“In Nigeria, we had eight Fifa Under-17 teams electing to stay at the Nike Lake Resort and the Amber Tinapa. This award is a global reaffirmation that Zimbabwe can, and does, produce highly skilled professionals of a world-class calibre.”
The awards, held on Thursday in Harare, had more than 50 nominees in total and six for the category that African Sun won. Hospitality groups that African Sun contended against included Protea Hotels, Hyatt, Legacy Hotels & Resorts, Accor Hospitality Management and Rainbow Tourism Group.
The Africa Investor Tourism Awards were created to showcase industry opportunities and achievements of stakeholders in the sector.
The Awards were held alongside the Zimbabwe Tourism Investor Summit which attracted more than 600 participants who included local business leaders as well as international investors.
African Sun Limited is the fastest growing hospitality group on the continent.
It has several other high-profile properties in its portfolio. These include the-award winning Grace Hotel in Johannesburg, The Victoria Falls Hotel (a member of the Leading Hotels of the World) in Zimbabwe and Obudu Mountain Resort in Nigeria.
The group’s interests cover all sectors of the hospitality industry from luxury resorts, to urban boutique hotels, city hotels and lodges. African Sun also manages and operates Intercontinental Hotels Group (IHG) affiliated brands such as Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn and Express by Holiday Inn to gain a foothold in new markets where these brands are familiar.
