Mirira by Hick Gwarimbo (Country Boy Records) A GOOD start this six-track offering by the Kadoma-based upcoming gospel musician.
Unlike the usual medi
ocre stuff that has come to be associated with young musicians, the album shows the youngster took his time to put together this low-budget production comprising keyboards, a bass guitar and vocals.
It is no wonder the title track, a call on Christians to persevere and be patient in their different circumstances, got a fair share of airplay on local radio on the release of the album.
Other good tunes include Vana, a rendition of the popular chorus Vana Vekudenga; Simbarashe which he says is a tribute to his mother who raised her family on her own following the death of Gwarimbo's father and Mwari Haadaro.
Priscilla Kwatara, who did the lead vocals on MC Villa's Unodzoka Here? and backed Willom Tight on his Sweet Stupet album, spices up the album with her melodious backing vocals.
Tokwira Sei Denga? By Mabasa aVaPostori Choir.
ONE of the numerous a capella groups that have arrived on the scene after trailblazers Vabati VaJehovah, this group comes at a time there is hot competition between Vabati VaJehovah and Vabati VeVhangeri and as result is overshadowed by these towering giants.
The group gives a fresh flavour to gospel classics such as Kudenga Kwakanaka, Munyaradzi and Ukashingirira.
While not as polished as Vabati VeJehovah, this group has the potential to grow given time and if they can desist from over-reliance on treading already thoroughly beaten paths with old gospel choruses.
