DOWN Town Studios, formerly based in Harare, has relocated to Marondera where it is believed recording competition is not as stiff as in the capital city, sources have said.

Because of other commitments the owner of the recording studio, Mike Mungoshi, had earlier indicated he would sell the studio equipment and concentrate on repairing musical instruments, a venture which has been more rewarding than recording.

Mungoshi started off promoting upcoming musicians and served quite a number of groups in that category. His recording fees were reasonably low and some of the debts under the arrangement could be settled in kind.

Mungoshi once said: "I don't think I will be recording for too long if the people I have talked to fulfil their promise to buy my equipment and take over my premises. This recording business is strenuous. I cannot do other things."

However it appears no buyers have taken over his business, hence the relocation.

A source who said he was winding up business in Mungoshi's offices said Down Town left Harare on December 1 last year to start a new lease of life in the Mashonaland East capital where musicians from rural province do not have access to a recording studio.

As a result, little known Artisan Recording Studio has taken over Down Town's Harare offices and hopes to inherit many of its Harare-based upcoming artists.

Like its predecessor, Artisan Recording Studio caters for rehearsals, demonstration tapes and final recording. One of the staffers said they have recorded well-known musicians such as Ruth Mapfumo and Noel Zembe in the past.
