By Foster Dongozi DEPOSED sungura king, Simon Chimbetu's new release, 10 Million Pounds Reward, could see him retain some of his urban followers who had drifted away in protest at his openly pro-Zanu PF songs. The song that irked Chimbetu's urban su
pporters most was Hoko, which was taken by many of his fans to mean that the journey to State House for the opposition Movement for Democratic Change would never be completed.
However, judging from the sales on the first day of the release of Chimbetu's latest offering, the good times might just be beginning to roll again for Chopper.
The album, which sold 10 000 copies when it was released on December 24, has been flying off the shelves, according to Kelvin Gasula of Metro Studios who are distributing the album.
Although Chimbetu did not want to confirm it, the sales may have been helped by the departure from politics.
"The third song on the album, Yeuka, is about the fact that as a freedom fighter, I fought on behalf of everybody, even those not related to me so I would not say my nationalist sentiments have been abandoned," Chimbetu said.
The album opens with KaRhumba, a catchy and danceable track, followed by Ten Million Pounds Reward and Yeuka. Maneno Yawongo, sung in Swahili, is another catchy number.
However, Kikiriri and Kumba should get many people reaching for their dancing shoes. Kikiriri, which sounds like a narration of his history, talks about how any bad thing in the society is linked to him.
Other songs on the album include Governor Conwell and Muridzo.
