LOSING a job is one of the most painful experiences in life. It goes with frustration, disappointment and grief.

But what remains after such a devastating incident are strings of hope that things will fall into shape again and the admission that life goes on.

Such hope has propelled Clive Mukundu  (in picture) to be one of the most sought-after music producers in the country.

The talented lead guitarist who worked with Oliver Mtukudzi for four years woke up in the face of doom and gloom when he was sacked from Mtukudzi’s Black Spirits together with five other band members.

Little did he know that the future was pregnant with huge opportunities that would transform him from a mere guitarist to a revered hit-maker.

He now owns Monolio Studios that has attracted the attention of upcoming and established musicians.

“Getting fired from Black Spirits was an unfortunate experience but I had to move on,” Mukundu explained.

“That was the only band that I worked with permanently throughout the 22 years that I have been in the music industry.”

“But I did not have any problem accepting it and moving on because I had already bought my studio equipment.

“I established a studio at home and started with upcoming musicians until even established names in the industry began flocking to the studio.”

Mukundu has so far recorded albums for musicians like Mawungira eNharira, Alexio Kawara, Ngoni Kambarami, Transit Crew, Mafriq, Hope Masike and Raymond Majongwe.

“I now feel that the studio is the right place for me. Although I am still assisting a number of musicians at live shows, I am more comfortable when recording and mixing music. I have mastered my new profession and I look forward to being the best producer in the country.”

Besides producing music, Mukundu has featured on more than 300 albums and some of the musicians he has assisted include Chiwoniso Maraire, Fungisai Zvakavapano, Dino Mudondo, Elias Musakwa, Celebration Choir, Somandla Ndebele and Mahendere Brothers.

It is such enormous experience across the music industry that would make it easy for him to work on any music genre.

Mukundu was born in Rusape in 1970.

He grew up in Harare attending schools in Kambuzuma and Mufakose.

He started his music career when he was still at school with a group called Sarungano Chanters.

After school, he worked with groups like Chax Brothers and Chikoko but the ventures were not rewarding.

He enrolled for a diploma in music at the Zimbabwe College of Music and started working with various groups as a session musician before hooking up with Mtukudzi.

Mukundu is married to Jean and they have two children Takunda (16) and Nyasha (12).
