SCOOPING the Outstanding Video award at the recently held National Arts Merit Awards was a milestone achievement for soul quartet Soul Bone. The talented outfit has been on the music scene for many years but only managed to release its first album titled Is it True? last year.
It is that debut release that has taken the group on a journey to dreamland.
Their first major achievement was a fifth position in the ZTV video awards for 2009 for the same video, Lets Party.
The classy video definitely deserved such recognition.
It was directed by Zimbabwean-born South Afican musician Buffalo Souljah and renowned Channel O presenter DJ Waxxy.
The video was shot in SA’s Rosebank suburb in Johannesburg at a Club Molokko.
Soul Bone member Bright ‘Spicy D’ Kadenga said it took seven hours to complete the shooting.
“It was all done in the club. The corners of the club were decorated differently and one would think we were changing sites,” explained Spicy D.
“We benefited from our directors’ experience and every moment of the shooting was enjoyable.
“The final product was a gem and we were all excited to be involved in such a spectacular project.”
The video begins with Soul Bone doing acapella on the streets.
Their producer Prince Tendai Mupfurutsa passes by and is impressed by the way they sing.
He invites them to a party later that day.
Dressed well for the all-white party, the four guys enter the club and everyone in the joint is surprised to see them.
They are new to the place and their smart attire attracts attention.
Little do the observers know that they are in for a real treat.
As the party begins to rock, Soul Bone is given a chance to jam a few songs and they let off the hit, Lets Party.
At first, everyone is surprised by the way these “new-comers” exhibit first class expertise in club music.
The party explodes into glitter and glamour and Soul Bone takes control.
Such is the simple script that has been emphatically enhanced by standard technology and international directing expertise to produce a top range video.
The four Soul Bone members are all from disadvantaged backgrounds and two of them are disabled but the group has become one of the best youth outfits in the country.
The other members are Jay D, Chris Joe and Flinx.
When they met and formed the group about four years ago at Danhiko, the boys never thought they would one day hog the limelight.
But through Mupfurutsa’s assistance, the group began its way up the ladder of fame last year and the members say more is in store for their fans.
