SEPTEMBER 4 is likely to be a memorable date in the history of entertainment in Zimbabwe. It is the date when international music stars Akon and Sean Paul are expected to share the stage at the National Sports Stadium.
Organisers of the concert are putting final touches to their deal with Sean Paul. They claim that everything has already been settled with Akon. Initially, Akon was scheduled to be the only international attraction at the show but the Sean Paul deal has added value to the gig.
Zimbabwe Tourism Authority and Zimswag are organising the show and both parties pledged their total commitment to the high profile show at a press conference in the capital on Thursday.
Zimswag chairman Prince Tendai Mupfurutsa said they were finalising the Sean Paul deal. “Money has already changed hands and we are just negotiating on the number of people he will travel with. He had indicated that he wants to come with a contigent of 15 people but we have advised him to downsize the entourage to cut costs,” said Mupfurutsa.
“He is working on it and we will be getting his response soon. But he is definitely coming to share the stage with Akon.” Givemore Chidzidzi, ZTA chief operations officer, said the show would be a great opportunity to take the country on an international limelight. “We have had great shows by international artists in the past and we hope that this show will be even greater. Akon and Sean Paul are big artists and we are expecting a big event,” said Chidzidzi.
Both artists are renowned entertainers and music fans should witness a historic event if they both make it to Zimbabwe. Preparations for the show are now at an advanced stage and the organisers have already contracted a South Africa sound company to do the sound engineering and stage design for the show.
Akon is expected to jet into Zimbabwe on September 1 and visit a number of tourist destinations in the country before the day of the show. Besides their performance at the stadium, Akon and Sean Paul are expected to feature in a huge “after party” function that would be held in the capital on the same night. Details of the party are still under wraps.
A host of local artists are expected to provide supporting acts to the international stars but the organisers are still to come up with the final line-up. Tickets to the show started selling at selected venues last week and they range between $10 and $100.
