SINCE parting ways with Hohodza Band in 2002, Progress Chipfumo has been on a steady rise to stardom.
With spectacular lead guitar skills and exceptional vocal talent, Chipfumo has become one of the most consistent live show performers locally. Although he is still to make it onto the list of the country’s big music stars, the dreadlocked singer has all that it takes to entertain fans at any level. He has had his fair share of controversy but his music is mature, lyrically rich and well arranged. Chipfumo has a comic and stylish way of tackling important social themes such as child abuse, inheritance, orphanhood and infidelity. His latest album, Tsiurika, has taken him a step up his success ladder. But it is the musician’s live show acts that have earned him respect among show goers. Even when he is pitted against the stars of local music, Chipfumo makes sure that he gives a good account of himself when he takes to the stage. He has performed at various events featuring the big names and he has also travelled countrywide with the likes of Alick Macheso, Tongai Moyo and Sulumani Chimbetu. In all these instances, Chipfumo has made sure that he shines and leaves people asking for more. Songs like Mangerengere, Mhai, Papi Zvapo and Tariro have proved to be popular with many. The musician’s outstanding performance at the Heroes Splush at Gwanzura Stadium last week was evidence to his capability. Today, Chipfumo performs at City Sports Bar in the city centre together with renowned dancers, Banyana Bafana. It is unusual to have such big shows on Sundays but the club has taken the initiative to give Chipfumo a chance to showcase his prowess. Chipfumo applauded City Sports Bar for giving him such an opportunity. “I rarely do shows on Sundays. Most of such shows are family shows but this show is a chance to see how our fans respond to evening shows on a Sunday,” said Chipfumo. “It will be my first time to perform at City Sports Bar but I have been to other musicians’ shows at the bar and I feel it is a good place for such a performance because attendance has always been good there.” City Sports Bar director Biggie Chinoperekwei said he was looking forward to the show with enthusiasm after having watched Chipfumo performing at a number of shows. “I have seen Chipfumo performing on numerous occasions and I have confidence in his act. “I am looking forward to a great show. Chipfumo gave our patrons a special teaser when he made a surprise appearance at Kireni Zulu’s show on Wednesday. “People enjoyed it and many are waiting for the show,” said Chinoperekwei. Other musicians that have performed at the bar include Leonard Zhakata and Seasons Band. Sulumani Chimbetu will be performing at the bar on Friday.
