AFTER a successful international tour, local production Zambezi Express has been nominated for the best production category at the Musical Theatre Awards in the UK.
The awards ceremony takes place in Edinburgh on Wednesday night and Zambezi Express is the only Zimbabwean production on the list. The pulsating musical, which rocked Reps Theatre in Avondale a couple of months ago, has been on international tour that saw it being staged in most parts of the UK. The Siyaya Arts production also has a chance for other awards at the show since there would be other people’s choice awards for nominated productions. It has been more than a year since the musical started showing but many are still following it with enthusiasm. It has been staged in Harare and Bulawayo in addition to featuring at a number of festivals. Zambezi Express left a mark at this year’s Harare International Festival of the Arts before it returned to Reps by public demand. The four-day show at Reps was sold out and theatre lovers are still calling for its return. It is no surprise that the play stole the hearts of many in the UK hence its nomination. The musical is based on a story about a young man called Zilli who has a dream to make it on the international scene through soccer. Rising from a township in Bulawayo, Zilli has to fight against numerous odds as he pursues his dream and it is his ups and downs in this quest that give the production an interesting feel. With a cast of about 25 stage performers, the musical has left many breathless through various stage spices that include accapella, acrobatics and serious traditional and contemporary dances. Through the 90 minutes of its duration, the production takes viewers through various life facets in addition to giving an outstanding entertainment value.
