SUNGURA musician Madzibaba William Chapu has managed to do what most established musicians failed — start a lucrative business to complement his music career.
It has become common for local musicians to die paupers because they could not lead decent lives due to meagre earnings from music. Even those that have been fortunate to have better incomes sometimes fail to invest wisely to safeguard their future. Chapu should have learnt a lesson from such occurrences and has started a public transport business. Although he has not made it to the list of established musicians yet, the Chimbuzi hitmaker, has ensured that he leads a decent life regardless of the direction that his music career might take. He says he is using his free time from the business to work on music. “Initially music was the major business but I decided to find something that would complement that career,” said Chapu. “I started with a truck that I would avail for hire before I bought mini-buses and then these long distance commuter buses. “The business has been growing fast and it has become my day-to-day commitment. “I am still very much into music but it has become more of a spare-time venture.” The musician is now working on his fifth album that he says would be released later this year. In the meantime he is planning a series of free shows around the capital that he says would help him reconnect with his fans. “It has been sometime since we held shows and I will do something like a road show to reintroduce myself in the industry before I release a new album.” Chapu said he was looking forward to working with established an upcoming musicians to do more shows when the album is released. “I will use these shows as precursors to a major programme of introducing musicians to investment lessons. “I have talked to a number of successful business people and we plan to host workshops for musicians where we can have lectures on how to start other businesses to complement our music careers.” His business trades under the name Chapu Transport and most of the buses ply the Harare-Nyanga route. Achieving such success after only five-years in the transport business is a bright beginning for Chapu. His music albums so far are Kunyengetera, Munhu Wenyama, Chimbuzi and Usagumbuke.
