THIS letter is in response to media reports flying around from suspended Zapu members.
While I feel that Pius Ncube, just like any other Zimbabwean, has a right to contest any position in Zapu, I believe that making it sound like he would be ousting or challenging Dumiso Dabengwa is both childish and silly if not outright myopic. Firstly, Dabengwa has not declared any interest in any position at congress. Secondly, he devoted nearly all his adult life fighting to ensure that Zimbabweans have a right to choose not only a leadership of their choice, but a party of their choice as well. It is not the duty of anyone, let alone Zapu policy for anyone to be denied a chance to lead Zapu as long as they meet constitutional requirements and they have grassroots support. People should start canvassing now, including Ncube and, or Mr Dombodzvuku from Mtawatawa. But what defies logic is that these gentlemen are not themselves willing to contest for higher office in Zapu. Why are they head-hunting a leader? First, they went knocking at Welshman Mabhena’s doors and were told in no uncertain terms that he was not available for cheap politicking, then in desperation, they approached Sibangilizwe Nkomo whose response was in the negative as well. Does it mean that they are not man enough or that they lack leadership qualities? If it is both, then why waste their time challenging a luminary like Dabengwa? Would anyone blame Zapu for getting rid of liabilities like these? But we encourage them to keep talking, for they provide juicy stories for the media, and by default, coverage for Zapu. After all, it is the kind of leadership stampede we are hoping for, and encouraging, for it shows that Zapu is indeed back by popular demand. This is further manifested by the fact that a number of suspended Chitungwiza MDC-T councillors are making moves to formally join Zapu. After our NEC meeting scheduled for next week, should we agree to take them on board, the revolutionary party will have councillors in Chitungwiza without one vote cast, nor one life lost in political violence. Tables are indeed turning,. Watch this space.
Mso Ndlovu Secretary for Administration for Zapu Northern Region.
