DR Alex Magaisa has made some very interesting, insightful contributions in the national interest over the years. His column stopped sometime this year and it’s a void which his followers, have no doubt, felt.
Dr Magaisa has a very creative and intuitive style which is intertwined with basic Zimbabwean life. Despite proceeding to academic Mecca in England after the University of Zimbabwe and local practice, he has not lost touch with the realities of Zimbabwean life and its palpable tragedies. Neither has he penned with the pliant fury of a hired gun as is commonplace in the state media.
He has also maintained emotional and intellectual balance for a person emanating from a heavily polarised, if not poisoned, political environment. With the ongoing constitutional debate, his contributions through your paper could not have been more timely given that he lectures constitutional law. Peers like Dr Madhuku et al are chipping in through their institutions and the broader the debate the better. His column could serialise talking points, the pros and cons, case studies from other countries etc.
We boast so much about the best literacy rates in Africa but our fundamental weakness as Zimbabweans is to leverage off that investment. Without Dr Magaisa’s input to the constitutional debate at this stage Zimbabwe is poorer, but I am sure your paper can do something about it.
Uncompromised Patriot Diasporal l Dr Magaisa is still free to contribute to The Standard — Ed.
