POLICE in Harare on Friday raided the Gays and Lesbians Association of Zimbabwe (Galz) offices in Milton Park.
In a statement yesterday, the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) said police officers armed with a search warrant stormed the organisation’s offices to search for dangerous drugs and pornographic material citing contravention of Section 157 (1) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23 and Section 32 (1) of the Censorship and Entertainment Control Act Chapter 10:04.
ZLHR said various computers and some documents were seized by the police during the raid.
The police also arrested and detained two Galz employees Ellen Chademana and Ignatius Muhambi, ZLHR said.
“ZLHR lawyers Dzimbabwe Chimbga and David Hofisi attended at Harare Central Police Station on Friday evening, but police remained adamant that the two Galz employees would be detained despite complaints from Chademana about her diabetic condition,” ZLHR said.
“On Saturday 22 May 2010 police refused to allow lawyers access to their clients.
“It remains unclear what charges will be preferred against the two Galz employees but lawyers will continue to make attendances at Harare Central Police Station.”
No comment could be obtained from police spokesperson Wayne Bvudzijena as his mobile went unanswered.
Gays and lesbians continue to face discrimination in Zimbabwe as many people, including President Robert Mugabe and a large section of the Christian community, describe them as social misfits.
