Sunday word: Battle of Biblical 'Armageddon'

Armaged’don

Revelation 16 talks about the seven bowls of the wrath of God to be poured out on the earth to signal the end of time, or rather “the judgement day” as referred to in our scriptures. Seven angels are tasked to each pour out a distinct bowl on to the earth to precipitate plagues of different kinds upon the inhabitants on the day of judgement.

Verses 12-16 describes the vision of Apostle John of what is to transpire after the sixth angel pours out his bowl of the wrath of God. It reads; “The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphra’tes, and its water was dried up, to prepare the way for the Kings from the east. And I saw, issuing from the month of the dragon and from the mouth of the beast and from the mouth of the false prophet, three foul spirits like frogs; for they are demonic spirits, performing signs, who go abroad to the kings of the whole world, to assemble them for battle on the great day of God the Almighty. And they assembled them at the place which is called in Hebrew “Armageddon”.

Armageddon is thus viewed in religious circles as a place designated as the scene of final battle at the end of world. That battle would be catastrophic and extremely destructive in nature. Many theories have been advanced as to what form that battle would take place and exactly where. Different kinds of notions from various quarters have sprung up depicting the events that would happen. Even the movie industry has profited from films of imagination replaying what they think would happen during that final battle. Others assume that there would be a third world war in which nuclear warheads would be unleashed against each other such that humanity would exterminate itself from the planet as a consequence. Whatever the thoughts; the one common denominator is that there will be a doomsday for the world to bring about the end of time. The battle ground is marked at this place called Armageddon, as per Revelation 16:16.

Religious gurus and scholars have been cracking their heads to come up with a scenario of this final battle. Different conditions have arisen. I will try to follow on the line of thinking advanced by a particular group of religious philosophers. This group of thinkers has deduced that the word ‘Armageddon’ itself is derived from two Hebrew words: Har and Megiddo which they have translated to mean Mount of Megiddo. Some Bible scholars have gone further to imply that this Mount of Megiddo is a reference to Mount Camel that stands above the valley in which the ancient city of Megiddo was located.

The book of Judges, chapter 7 carries a story of a battle that was fought by the Israelites in the valley of Megiddo, led by Gideon and just 300 of his men. They were very much outnumbered by their enemies, whose number was described to be like the sand of the seashore. With the hand of God and under His instruction, there was a great victory for the very few children of the Almighty God at this battle fought at the valley of Megiddo. It was a miraculous victory beyond any comprehension. It is assumed that something alike is likely to happen again at the end of the time when the combined powers of the dragon, the beast and the false prophet choose to fight or oppress the true followers of God who follow His commandments.

However, while many people assume that the battle of Armageddon will be a physical war, it is likely to be a spiritual war, in the likeness of our Heavenly Father who is a spiritual being. When the trumpet of God goes forth at the end of time, the graves of the righteous will be opened to give immortal glory to His saints. Of the faithful followers, many will be saved from the effects of the seven last plagues to be poured out on to the earth and they will be given the precious gift of immortality.

Under the command of Jesus Christ and the angels of God, the righteous will be gathered together from the four corners of the world to face Satanic followers who will then perish when seven angels unleash the seven owls of the wrath of God upon the unfaithful inhabitants of the earth. The spirits of the sinful will be condemned to eternal damnation while those of the good will celebrate eternal life.

He battle of Armageddon will be a war between good and evil. The good, although outnumbered massively by the bad, will emerge victorious from that war of attrition. Satan has so far managed to gather numerous followers of false doctrines and teachings led by a clique of false prophets or ‘men of god’ disguised as if coming from God or His Son, Jesus Christ. Multitudes are being recruited into this army of Satan unaware. They will fight in the devil’s corner in defence of their manmade doctrines believing that they are on the right side. These are very numerous in numbers which leads them to think that they can easily defeat the small numbers of the true children of God, who have steadfastly abided by the commandments of God and the instructions of Jesus Christ, His Son.

Behold the battle of Armageddon is on the horizon.
