OWEN OUT Michael Owen will be out injured until the end of the season, after learning he needs surgery to repair the hamstring injury that forced him out of last weekend’s League Cup final.
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson revealed on Friday that the injury suffered by the striker was more serious than initially thought, definitively ending any lingering hope Owen had of making England’s squad for the World Cup in June and July. Owen limped out of Sunday’s 2-1 win over Aston Villa at Wembley just before halftime and will have an operation on Monday.
TIGER IN THE WOODS Scandal-hit Tiger Woods was not among the 64 players announced on Friday for next week’s World Golf Championships CA Championship at Doral, a main tuneup for next month’s Masters. Woods has won the event six times, most recently in 2007 when the tournament was first played at Doral, and had never missed playing in the $8.5 million event before not signing up by Friday’s deadline. His other triumphs in the WGC series event came in 1999, 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2006. Overall, Woods has collected three titles at Doral. After admitting marital infidelity in a scandal that erupted last November, Woods announced an “indefinite break” from golf in December.
HIT FOR HAITI Retired stars Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova and Lindsay Davenport are joining Justine Henin in a second match at a charity tennis exhibition to raise money for Haiti. Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal will team up with retired stars Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi in an already announced men’s match during the “Hit for Haiti” benefit to be played on March 12 at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. Tournament director Steve Simon says he expects a minimum of $1 million to be raised for Haiti earthquake relief efforts. A similar event held during the Australian Open raised more than $600 000. Federer and Sampras will team up for a doubles against Nadal and Agassi. Graf and Davenport will play Navratilova and Henin, who recently returned to the pro tour after a brief retirement. — Supersport.
