AMBITIOUS premiership side Eagles has roped in Caps legend Friday “Breakdown” Phiri as their new technical manager.
Phiri made his name at the Green Machine, when he starred for the side in the early eighties with such players as Shacky “Mr Goals” Tauro, Stanley “Sinyo” Ndunduma, Joel “Jubilee” Shambo (all late), Stanford “Stix”Mtizwa, Clever Muzuva and Brenna Msiska. Eagles have since the end of last year been buoyed by the sponsorship deal they signed with agricultural equipment manufacturers New Holland Agriculture. New Holland through their international subsidiaries also bankroll such teams as Mike Temwanjira’s FC Vaslui in Romania and Italian giants Juventus. The team has made their statement of intent in challenging for honours by appointing Phiri as the technical manager. Previously the club did not have such a post. Phiri will work with head coach Steven Matina. Phiri joined Eagles from Beitbridge-based Southern Region Division One side Border Strikers. “I signed my contract on 10 January 2010. I went to Beitbridge with the intention of taking Border Strikers into the league, but unfortunately, I could not achieve my goals. “My main duty here is to see that there is development and that the club finishes within the top 10 so that we can start talking about challenging for the championship next season after thorough preparations,” Phiri said. In 2007, Phiri was the technical manager at Monomotapa before he was axed and in came Norman Mapeza who resigned a year later. In addition to beefing up their technical team, Eagles have signed a number of players with most of them coming from Division One clubs. They have brought in Misheck Mburayi from relegated army side Black Rhinos. Also making a comeback is Malvern Dumbura their own son who they had loaned to Highway who got relegated last year. “We also have Donald Chingwa a striker, Goodmore Makuwa a defender both from Hippo Valley in Chiredzi, Stan Murovi from Blue Ribbon, Patrick Khumbula from Chiredzi United and Witness Nyamutsaka from Monomotapa United. “We lost Courage Dennias to Caps United and Trymore Nyamadzawo who joined newcomers FC Victoria,” Matina said.
