Shooting Stars….........0 Lengthens…………....(0) 1 RODWELL Dhlakama bounced back into top flight football yesterday but was unable to stop his new team Shooting Stars from going down to Lengthens at Dzivarasekwa.
Dhlakama took over from Moses Chunga who quit the Wild Boys a fortnight ago. On the opposite bench new Lengthens coach Jostein Mathuthu began with a win in his first match to mark a sweet return to the premiership.
A solitary goal from defender Dennis Joronawo five minutes before fulltime was all that separated the two teams.
Joronawo was the toast of the day for the Happy People when he buried the ball home after a free kick by substitute Norest Mkwezvaramba was blocked into his path.
The Lengthens defender's shot took a wicked deflection off a defender to sail past Pedzisayi Gumiremhete in goals for Shooting Stars.
The goal was the only major highlight of the entire match, which was uninspiring as the sides took turns to miss the goal.
More Moyo missed glorious chances for Lengthens and so did Limited Chikafa who must have left his shooting boots at home.
Two minutes from time, Kelvin Mawire could have salvaged a point for Shooting Stars but he side-netted his effort.
Elliot Matsika also wasted a numbers of set pieces just outside the box but failed to test Lengthens goalkeeper Fidias Chifamba.
Even the introduction of forgotten striker Prince Mbara failed to produce goals for the Wild Boys. When the goal finally came, Lengthens resorted to defending their lead, thwarting Stars’ late charge.
They hung on dearly to their lead giving the nomadic Mathuthu a win on his return to top-flight football. Meanwhile defending champions Gunners lost one-nil to Eagles at Gwanzura.
