THE man who single-handedly destroyed CAPS United in Khartoum two weeks ago, Edward “Duduza” Sadomba, will not be part of the Al Hilal cast today as his wife has been taken ill in Sudan.
The Sudanese side will play Makepekepe today at Rufaro in the second leg of the Confederations Cup match. Sadomba was the toast of the day, when Al-Hilal trounced CAPS United 5-0 in the first leg in Khartoum a fortnight ago. Duduza scored a hatrick in the match.
The unavailability of Sadomba is sweet music to the ears for Makepekepe who however have a hard task of overturning the basketball scoreline. Sadomba is said to be attending to his wife Sherlynn Sande, who is said to be ill. The nature of her illness has not been disclosed.
Speaking to Standardsport on Friday Serbian-born Al Hilal coach Milutin “Mucho” Sredojevic confirmed the unavailability of Sadomba. “I understand the situation with his family (wife) is just bad. This means that he will no longer feature in the match he wanted to play most especially taking it into consideration that he would have been playing against a home team on home soil.
“We do not have to worry very much because we brought 19 players. His teammates will do the duty for him while he nurses his wife in Sudan,” Sredojevic said.
The team arrived aboard an Ethiopia Airways flight on Wednesday and the notable absentee was Sadomba. Sredojevic said his club was targeting several Zimbabwean players.
“Zimbabwe is a country full of talent and good young players. I have seen the country supplying players to other African countries and Europe. I cannot rule out luring a number of good players to join Sadomba in Sudan,” Sredojevic said.
Al-Hilal have been crowned Sudanese champions six times in the past seven years. They have won the championship 25 times out of 45 seasons thus making them the most successful club in Sudan.
Maxwell Mironga, CAPS United chief executive officer said they would turn the tables on Al-Hilal.
“We will do our best even though we have a mountain to climb. We cannot just give up like that. They have a superior goal difference and three points at stake, but we will fight hard to overcome that deficit,” Mironga said.
Wilson Mutekede, Makepekepe team manager said they had three players nursing injuries. “Courage Dennias and Marvel Samaneka have knee injuries while George Karimupfumbi is not feeling well. But we hope that he (Karimupfumbi) recovers before the match on Sunday (today),” Mutekede said.
CAPS United first choice goalkeeper Edmore Sibanda who had gone for trials in South Africa is expected to feature in the game. The team will also be missing the services of their Democratic Republic of Congo import Yves Ebabali whose one-year contract expired yesterday.
