Chelsea on a roll
PREMIER League leaders Chelsea kept up their 100% start to the season with an efficient display against dogged Stoke yesterday.
Frank Lampard had an early penalty saved by Thomas Sorensen before Florent Malouda fired in the opener after latching on to John Terry’s fine pass. The visitors were unlucky not to equalise when Glenn Whelan thumped a 25-yard effort against the crossbar.
But Didier Drogba wrapped up the win with the champions’ second spot-kick after Sorensen tripped Nicolas Anelka.
The Potters provided a far sterner test than West Brom and Wigan — Chelsea’s previous two opponents in a free-scoring start to the season — but they were unable to stop Carlo Ancelotti’s side chalking up an eighth straight home league win.
Wigan stun Spurs
HUGO Rodallega’s second-half strike earned Wigan their first points of the season after a resilient performance away to lacklustre Tottenham yesterday. Rodallega smashed in a fine cross-shot as the Latics shrugged off two heavy home drubbings to record their first victory at White Hart Lane. Steve Gohouri also hit the bar for the visitors with a volley while Antolin Alcaraz missed a glorious chance. Spurs offered little but Jermain Defoe twice went close in the first half.
Arsenal beat Blackburn
ANDREY Arshavin grabbed the winner for Arsenal as they showed the steel needed to overcome a committed Blackburn. Theo Walcott gave the Gunners the lead at Ewood Park, powering an angled shot past Paul Robinson after a slick move. But Mame Biram Diouf tapped in from an El-Hadji Diouf pass as Rovers impressively equalised.
Arshavin threaded in the winner after a Cesc Fabregas effort was deflected into his path and the north Londoners held on to complete a hard-fought win. —BBC Sport
