BY ALBERT MARUFU ZIMBABWE Rugby Union’s four national team committees responsible for the Sables, Young Sables, Pangolins, and the Cheetahs are in a race against time to appoint the respective teams’ technical departments ahead of their forthcoming tournaments.
The technical teams of the four national teams’ contracts expired on December 31.
The country’s flagship team, the Sables, is this year in a tight schedule as they are to take part in a tri-nations tournament that will include Botswana and Zambia at home before beginning their defence of the Victoria Cup from July to August.
Their next assignment will be in the Africa Cup Group 1A whose dates will come from the confederation of African Rugby (CAR) while the Under 19 squad, which was coached by the duo of Brighton Chivandire and Godwin Murambiwa, will be taking part in the Junior Rugby Trophy (JWRT).
The Pangolins will be involved in the continental qualifiers for the 2013 Women’s Sevens Rugby World Cup in Morocco while Cheetahs are also engaged in a number of tournaments.
While the other three national brands—Cheetahs, Pangolins and Young Sables—are not likely to present their respective committee’s with problems, it is the selection of the Sables head coach that is likely to cause headaches.
The Sables committee, which comprises chairman Dumile Moyo, Lesley Manhombo, Elter Nengomasha, Winston Makamure, Noddy Kanyangarara and Nesbert Denga is expected to meet on Tuesday to appoint the technical team. Sables Committee’s chairman, Moyo, could not be reached on his mobile, but a source told Standardsport that the committee is caught in between giving in to player power and stamping their authority. Players are demanding a change in their team’s coaching department.
“There is not much time to open up the vacant posts for applications so the committee will have to look at names that will be thrown in during the meeting that will be held on Tuesday. The Sables were supposed to have started preparations on Sunday, but cannot do so because of the non-availability of the technical team,” said the source.
