PSL to co-opt new secretary-general

THE Premier Soccer League (PSL) will by next week have co-opted a new secretary-general onto its management committee to replace Chris Sambo, who was promoted to the post

of chief executive last month.

IndependentSport also heard yesterday that the PSL management committee, led by chairman Tendai Madzorere, has taken up the role of a board of directors to conform with modern management structures.

“The management committee drafts policy for the league in consultation with the clubs, and the chief executive’s duty is to implement those policies,” Madzorera said.

“As was the case with the secretary-general, all correspondence will be directed to the chief executive, but the management committee makes the key decisions. So the chief executive runs the league and is the secretary of the management committee, while the secretary-general acts as the league’s secretary.”

The PSL secretary-general’s post fell vacant after Sambo was appointed chief executive at the instigation of the new sponsor, Econet Wireless.

“We are actually having an executive meeting next week to co-opt an individual to replace me, which is a requirement in the PSL constitution that the management committee be made up of six members including a secretary general,” Sambo said.

Madzorere said PSL management committee members will submit names for deliberation, and the appointment would be made on the same meeting.

Meanwhile, Sambo said the league has only handled 20 players’ transfers in the mid-season transfer period so far.

“It’s been very quite. I think it has to do with that most clubs have enough depth from the first registration at the beginning of the season,” said Sambo.

“Generally, clubs have been cooperative. There have been no instances where transfer laws have been violated and in terms of professionalism we are seeing a lot of improvement with matches starting on time and teams using the changing rooms before matches.”
