THE Mashonaland Volleyball Association (MVA) is making frantic efforts to kick-start this year’s league programme on a high note with season openers set for the University of Zimbabwe on May 22.
With volleyball action also taking place in Matabeleland and Midlands regions, MVA, which comprises Harare teams and Mashonaland provincial sides, has gone a gear up this year in its efforts to source sponsorship.
Erasmus Mupukuta, the information and publicity officer for MVA, confirmed the league will begin in two weeks’ time at the University of Zimbabwe and that efforts shall be made to offer prizes at the end of the season.
“We’ve to raise more funds for our coffers,” he said on Wednesday.
The men’s league consists of eight teams that include champions Malbereign Sharks, Thunder of Highfields, Varsity, Black Rhinos, Air Zimbabwe, Kutama Old Boys Association (Koba), Jewel Stars and the Junior Stars Harare of Braeside suburb.
Eight teams feature in the women’s league and the list comprises champions Varsity, Black Rhinos, Bindura University, Chinhoyi University, Mufakose Hawks, Malbereign Sharks, Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe RBZ and Post Office Savings Bank POSB.
Meanwhile, MVA is looking for a sponsor and officials said they are holding negotiations with a number of prospective sponsors.
