MASVINGO and Mashonaland Central provinces have joined the list of provincial bodies affiliated to the Basketball Union of Zimbabwe (BUZ) as efforts are being made towards making the sport professional.
Admire Masenda, the BU
Z chairman, confirmed to IndependentSport that Mashonaland Central had set up a province with six teams while Masvingo now had four teams.
He however could not give more details about the new entrants. Masvingo and Mashonaland Central join other provincial bodies like Harare’s Mashonaland Basketball Association, Bulawayo’s Matabeleland Amateur Basketball Association, Midlands Basketball Association and Manicaland Basketball Association.
Masenda could also neither confirm nor deny that there are plans to make the sport professional.
“We want to map a strategic planning session and we’re brainstorming to come up with a framework of how give the sport more impetus,” he said.
BUZ is scheduled to hold its annual general meeting AGM next month and provincial affiliates also have to hold their election either at the end of this month or early next month.
Masenda scoffed at the prospects of the rebel Premier Basketball League’s taking over the running of the sport at the highest level.
“What is so special about those guys (the rebels), may I ask? If anything is going to happen in national league format, then it should be under the auspices of BUZ,” he said.
