THE powerful Mashonaland Cricket Association (MCA)’s annual general meeting set for tomorrow comes hard on the heels of explosive meetings by other provincial associations recently.

The Matebeleland and Midlands provinces recently held annual general meetings that were marred by controversy over the standoff between the Zimbabwe Cricket Union (ZCU) and 15 senior white players.

The highlight of the MCA meeting is likely to be the election of the association’s chairman, a position currently held by the controversial Tawengwa Mukuhlani.

The chairman automatically becomes a member of the ZCU board.

Mukuhlani is one of the ZCU directors who have been accused of advocating the ouster of the 15 rebel players. Sources within the province said this week that a campaign to oust him has been intense.

Provincial associations have been mounting pressure on ZCU board members to boot out chairman Peter Chingoka at the national association’s annual general meeting next month.

Veteran sports administrator Alwyn Pichanick is the patron of the MCA and is likely to be retained. But Rory McWade, who is one of the vice-chairmen, faces a tough challenge to his position.

MCA general manager Givemore Makoni told IndependentSport that 20 clubs would elect the chairman, his two vices and board members for the province.

The clubs will also make nominations for the national selection panel to be presented to the ZCU for consideration.
