STANDARDIND FC emboldened its bid for the Communications League Cup with an unequivocal 5-1 walloping of Econet last week to book a date with media rivals, Fingaz in the pen
ultimate stage of the tournament.
The stage is set for the simmering rivalry between Standardind and Fingaz to produce a thrilling battle.
Fingaz breezed into the semi-finals last week courtesy of a rebound of the ball into the nets following a poor clearance by Cosmopots goalkeeper in the second half of extra time, to breach a goal-less deadlock.
It was an electric atmosphere at the University of Zimbabwe last week as teams spiritedly hunted for places in the semi-finals.
Champions Copy World, who were favourites to lift the cup were dumped out of the tournament with a 2-3 defeat by DStv.
On the surface, Standardind appears favourites. However, it will be recalled by both sides how, in an emotionally-contested league match earlier this year, Fingaz came back from a first half 0-3 deficit to win the match 5-3 in the last 20 minutes.
Standardind made a statement last week by beating fighting Econet.
Coach Charles Muchemwa literally declared war on Fingaz.
“Our professional relationship with Fingaz only ends in the newsrooms and tomorrow it will be a serious battle on the field of play,” said Muchemwa.
“I am happy to be coach of a team that believes in team-work. We didn’t join this league for fun, but to get results, and that we will do.”
The other semi-final match at the University of Zimbabwe tomorrow pits DStv against Nashtek.
The final will be played tomorrow and the winners will win prize money and a trophy.
Robson Ndlovu, the league treasurer urged all teams to turn up.
“We want to end the tournament on a very high note. We want it to be a day of fun and excitement,” said Ndlovu. “We therefore urge all teams in the league to come and be part of the excitement tomorrow as well as witness the crowning of this year’s winners of the League Cup.”
