There’s nothing positive to say about Zimbabwe

THE article in the last week’s Independent by Msekiwa Makwanya made very disappointing reading indeed, especially now when Zimbabwe is in the news for all the wrong reasons. It is a great pity that some people no longer desire to identify

themselves with Zimbabwe or as Zimbabweans.

On the question of saying negative things about our beautiful country, I can only say that there is very little that is positive about Zimbabwe right now. To pretend otherwise is to bury one’s head in the sand. I very much doubt it if you would be so positive if you were in Zimbabwe during this rather sad chapter in our country’s history.

I am of the opinion that in the absence of a political solution we can wish all we want, but our country will continue to go down the sewers until common sense prevails. And of course to say negative things about Zimbabwe now is quite justified; remember people are angry and that there is no need for all this human suffering in the very first place.

Our problems are man-made. What Zimbabwe needs right now is a government that has both compassion and a conscience – conspicuous by their absence right now.

H Masawi,

Harare.
