THE match between Zimbabwe and Kenya tomorrow in Nairobi in the 2010 World Cup/ Africa Cup qualifiers was almost cancelled by Fifa over security concerns.
Kenyan news agency reports say Kenyan football authorities had to move fast and give security guarantees to the world governing body to escape the postponement.
An unimpressed Fifa security official, Amri Shaheen, had recommended that the match be called off owing to the chaotic arrangements during the Kenya versus Guinea tie last Saturday where at least 67 000 spectators forced their way into the 35 000 capacity Nyayo Stadium.
As a result, organisers appointed Khalif Shabell of the Kenyan Armed Forces, to oversee all matters concerning safety.
“I can assure you that there will be no repeat of what we saw during the match between Kenya and Guinea.
We have concluded creating an elaborate and integrated security arrangement,” Shabell said at the press conference in the Kenyan capital.
Zimbabwe’s Warriors currently top Group A and a win over the Harambee Stars, 2-0 victors over Guinea last weekend, will see them consolidate their position. – Staff Writer.
