Mimosa to reshuffle coaching staff

BY BRIAN NKIWANE FLAMBOYANT premiership newcomers Mimosa Football club who have changed their name to FC Platinum seem to be enjoying their shopping spree and are now targeting coaches.

The Zvishavane-based side stormed on the transfer market with a swagger, splashing an average of US$20 000 to sign players. The team was promoted into the topflight league last year after pipping Chapungu United to the title in the Central Region.

Nomadic veteran coach Benjamin Moyo, brother to Zifa board member competitions Benedict Moyo, has been appointed the new head coach replacing Jairos Tapera.  The former national team and Tongogara Boys defender Tapera was in charge of the team in Division One and the club is reported to be earmarking him for the director of coaching post.

Highlanders goalkeepers’ coach Peter “Captain Oxo” Nkomo is also set to  join Mimosa as assistant coach. Platinum FC secretary Phillip Muvengwa said Moyo will be the club’s head coach but they had not yet finalised drafting contracts for other people like Tapera who took the club into the Premier Soccer League.

“We are going to announce the entire technical team next week after holding our trials,” he said.

Muvengwa dismissed rumours that Mimosa had acquired the services of Joel and Zephaniah Ngodzo and Tafadzwa Dube.

“From the look of things, we are going to be guided by the coach. We are going to hold trials next week whereby any aspiring player will have to prove himself, and then from there we can start signing players according to agreements that we made earlier,” Muvengwa said.

Muvengwa could not ascertain which players were going to be offloaded by the club after gaining promotion.

“As I said we have not yet finalised on our team, so I cannot tell who is going to be offloaded and who is going to remain from the team that we had last year,” added Muvengwa.

Unconfirmed reports say veteran player and former Lancashire Steel defender Moses Mwafulirwa who captained the club for the entire season last year is earmarked for the juniors coaching post as FC Platinum is looking forward to a vibrant junior policy. Mwafulirwa is a holder of a Level two coaching certificate.

Other players that include former Masvingo United dreadlocked defender Godfrey “Mai Mahofa” Dondo are set to make a comeback to the league. Dondo had a brilliant season last year.
