DrumBeat: Sandra Ndebele – An embodiment of resilience

Standard People
WITH GODWIN MUZARI Like her or hate her, Sandra Ndebele is an embodiment of resilience.

I say this because I was one of the people that had reservations over her adventurous character at some point but I now admire her steadfastness. She is one in a few women who can stand for what they believe in and ensure that the world realises that the norm is not always a must.

I used to describe her as controversial, wayward, wild and raunchy but I now call her tough, unpredictable and buoyant. I admit that she possesses a solid soul of determination.

Since she came to the limelight some years back, the prefix “controversial” was commonly attached to her public references. Of course it might not be easy to convince most people that she is no longer controversial but I believe she has proved that the even sky is not the limit — there is more to be achieved even in deepest dungeons.

Who would have imagined that Sandra would one day have a first-class white wedding after all the controversy and negativity that was thrust at her? To me, she makes boulevards in hell.

Just imagine how she was battered with negative criticism for her “skimpy” dresses and “raunchy” dances at the very primary stages of her career. The comments were meant to pull her down but she would not have any of it. She soldiered on and changed social perceptions over her type of art.

Sandra’s costumes, stage act rooted in Ndebele culture

When it came to Sandra’s costumes and stage performances she openly told the world that she was being very cultural and those attacking her were not aware of some common traits of her culture.

She succeeded and even opened the way for many artists who followed in her footsteps. I give her credit for the influx of female dance groups. Although the dance groups slightly differ from Sandra in content and context, who cares about skimpy dressing or raunchy dancing anymore? It is now a common art.

When she went for a tour of Austria in 2005, there were various versions as to how she had got the deal and what she had done there. She brought an album recorded in that country and proved that she had gone there “strictly for business.”At some point, she was linked to a pornographic video clip that circulated in the country but that rumour still failed to pull her down. Someone opened a Facebook account in her name but she made sure that it was blocked. Many local celebrities that have fallen victim to the same trick have done nothing. After ending her turbulent marriage to Bhekilizwe “AK” Ndlovu many thought she was down and out but just a fortnight ago, she tied the knot with Mbusi Sibindi. She is now a proud wife and that has all been born out of her strongest attribute — she refuses to be pulled down under whatever circumstances.Maybe she now stands as an example to Makanaka Wakatama, Pauline Gundidza among other celebrities nursing battered images.
