Vic Falls contributes majority finalists

Standard People
by Rosie Mitchell Victoria Falls, our very own wonder of the world, has long been the hub of tourism in our country. While the downturn of tourism over the “dark decade” hit Victoria Falls hard and previously seething crowds of tourists dwindled radically, there has always remained a steady trickle of visitors who are delighted and awestruck to see the mighty Falls and then partake of this little town’s many other attractions.

These include any number of adrenaline-inducing adventure activities — white water rafting, bungee jumping, gorge swings and the like — plus excellent game viewing and canoeing — and, dining in some of the country’s very best restaurants.

As probably our country’s number one tourist destination, restaurants in Vic Falls need to strive for the highest international standards, against which visitors are liable to judge them, and not surprisingly, our competition has as a result been so far dominated by restaurants in this town, with Victoria Falls Safari Lodge scooping top awards for years, for their Boma and Makuwa-kuwa restaurants.

Makuwa-kuwa has won the Deluxe Restaurant of the Year Award for the duration of this competition to date, as well as Most Imaginative Menu.

Interestingly, during 2009 and 2010, as the economy began to turn a corner and gradually show some small signs of improvement, so other restaurants up at the Falls have upped their game. A glance at the finalists list on this page shows it.

New entrants came in for 2010, notably the Victoria Falls Hotel, which has already made the cut as a finalist with both The Livingstone Room and Jungle Junction, while other Vic Falls entrants who had not made any special waves before 2009, most decidedly have now done so!

Watch A’Zambezi River Lodge’s The Amulonga and Ilala Lodge’s The Palm, which last year was a “Highly Commended” finalist as well as the Vic Falls Safari Lodge and Vic Falls Hotel’s fine entrants and finalists mentioned already.
