‘Troubled’ Macheso seeks divine intervention

Standard People
By GODWIN MUZARI Alick Macheso is known for composing songs that hint on his personal experiences for some albums that pillar his stretchy career. A new song that the musician has started playing at his shows, which could roughly be titled Huyai Samasimba could easily pass as a mirror of an era of strains and challenges that the musician has triggered upon himself.

On the song, Macheso emotionally calls for divine intervention in a difficult situation and begs God to remember a lost soul.

“Oh lord, you are the almighty and powerful, please come down and strengthen us. You are our creator and owner of our brains and bodies,” go the lyrics in part.Juxtaposing the lyrics with what Macheso has been going through since taking Tafadzwa as a second wife and the subsequent controversy that surrounds the entrance of Adeline Hunidzarira into the thickening plot, one might be forgiven to conclude that the musician is making a real prayer for deliverance and salvation.

When he performed the song at a recent show, the musician seemed to be possessed by some spirit, with eyes closed and hands stretched upwards in a begging gesture, Macheso attracted the sympathy and interest of his fans that easily sang along to the unknown song.

Macheso’s situation has become more complicated with each move that he makes in trying to solve an apparently tricky puzzle that his marriage spree has created. The musician’s manager, William Tsandukwa, said the musician had started randomly dropping the lyrics at the end of his old songs since a few weeks ago.

“That is the way he composes his songs. He usually begins with fusing new lyrics with old songs and that is how most of his songs have started,” said Tsandukwa.“He has been singing that song for some weeks now and it is obviously a new song that is shaping up.”

However, Tsandukwa could not tell what had inspired the song saying he had not talked to Macheso about it yet.

An analysis of Macheso’s discography shows that he composes many emotional songs based on personal experiences and feelings. On his first album, Magariro, the musician composed a song titled Pakutema Munda, which was a clear reference to his split from Nicholas Zakaria that was extremely acrimonious.

On the album Vapupuri Pupurai , Macheso emotionally lashed at his copycats through the song. Word has it that most songs with titles of female names like Monalisa, Madhawu and Petunia were references to real people and events while the song Tafadzwa is a clear dedication to his second wife.

Considering that Macheso only released a new album last year, it is uncommon for him to start revealing upcoming songs to the public after such a short period , which might suggest that the new song is a revelation of the musician’s hearty desire — divine deliverance from deep mire.
