BY ALBERT MARUFU STEPHEN Muzhingi – still suffering from the aftereffects of competing at the Comrades Marathon — is doubtful for the inaugural US$70 000 Sunshine City Marathon that will be run around Harare starting from the National Sports Stadium this morning.

Muzhingi, a three-time Comrades marathon winner, said being the ambassador of the race, he would have wanted to compete, but is still experiencing pains from the latest edition of the Comrades Marathon he won on May 29 this year.

“I do not think I will compete in the race as I did not have enough time to rest since the Comrades Marathon in South Africa. I still feel the pain so I have to give myself enough time to recover.

“An athlete has to rest for at least three months after competing in a marathon. The organisers want me to run but I also have to look after my health. “If I am to run, people should not expect me to win the race as I will be taking it as part of training. Ndichiri kurwadziwa  (I still feel the pain),” he said. Muzhingi, who also took part in the Two Oceans Marathon and rested for only 37 days before defending the Comrades Marathon for the third consecutive year, said he would have to make the final decision today.

“It will all depend on how I would have woken up on the morning.  I am still to enter for the race,” said the Chitungwiza-based athlete.

Another Zimbabwean athlete Chasara Masiyatsva, who also competed at this year’s edition of the Comrades marathon, has pulled out of the race opting to rest.

“I am not taking part in the race, but I am here to support fellow Zimbabweans,” said Chasara who finished on position six at the Comrades Marathon.

However, half marathon experts Rutendo Nyahora and Luwis Masunda promised a good race as they have prepared for the marathon.
