After having lost the elections in 2008, the party has been trying in vain to be what it used to be; loved and willingly supported by the people.
Unfortunately the party has outlived its usefulness and its president can no longer sell. Having to share power with other political parties after the formation of the inclusive government has not been easy for a party that used to enjoy exclusive powers since independence in 1980.
Because it is now part of the inclusive government, it is now required to co-operate with other political parties implementing government resolutions. Zanu PF has to do a lot of adjustment to accommodate other political players in the GNU. It is now one leg of a three-legged pot and as such, no party has a monopoly of policy direction of this great nation.
This is what President Mugabe, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and DPM Arthur Mutambara signed for on that memorable September 15 2008 at Rainbow Towers. The executive authority of the inclusive government is shared among the President, the Prime Minister and cabinet. This is provided for under article 20 of the GPA sub-section 20.1.1.
It is therefore political suicide for Zanu PF to cling to its last congress resolution held in Mutare which states that elections be held this year when everything is militating against this position.
The former ruling party should accept that elections can only be held if and when all the parties to the GPA agree, which will only be possible after the execution of the roadmap.
