BY LESLELY WURURAYAYIA shop owner in downtown Harare shocked morning shoppers when he shot himself in front of customers and his workers amid reports that he was battling mounting debts. 

When The Standard news crew arrived at the shop situated at corner Robert Mugabe and Rezende Street at around 2pm, police were removing the businessman’s body.

According to his workers, the businessman on Friday called several women he owed money so that he could repay them yesterday. He did not repay them, but instead he allegedly drew a gun and shot himself.

The amount of money involved could not be immediately ascertained. The shop sells electric gadgets on lay-bye. One of the clients who asked to remain anonymous said he had bought a plasma television on lay-bye.

“I bought a 42-inch plasma television and spent a lot of money saving for my purchase and now this,” he said. “Am I going to get my money back?”Police spokesperson James Sabau said he was not aware of the incident and could not verify the details because he was out of the office.
