Speaking in an interview recently, Mutodi acceded he was busy courting Macheso. “We are still in the initial stages of the discussion but it is true that we are discussing the possibility. Macheso is probably the best bassist on the land and for me as an upcoming musician, to work with him is more than an honour,” said Mutodi.
“For him it will be just another feather on his cap but as for us, this is going to be a time for learning, if all goes according to plan,” said Mutodi.Macheso also welcomed the initiative and said he would be very pleased to work with Mutodi.
“I am one person who enjoys working with new people because I know both parties have something to learn from the experience. It is not anything peculiar as I have done it before with the late Beater Mangethe,” said Macheso.
If it comes to pass then Macheso is likely to prove his guitar skills on a song titled Angelina. The song carries on it some interesting bass lines that should definitely prove to be a hit with Macheso strumming the cords.
It is a love song that is like many of Mutodi’s songs, punctuated with rich Shona idioms that will leave many reminiscing about the late actor Nevernay Chinyanga.
Mutodi said he was planning to have a sungura version of the rhumba song in order to fully engage Macheso’s prowess. Last week, the two musicians had dinner together at Mutodi’s house after Macheso’s show at Ochi City. They discussed various musical projects on which they can work together and very soon they will embark on joint shows.
Mutodi has worked with established musicians like Oliver Mtukudzi and Sulumani Chimbetu. For far too long, duets have proven to be more popular than individual songs. The most obvious reason should be that both artistes’ fans would for once unite.
